Weekly Log: 2.6.17 - 2.12.17

Monday - 0 miles

8 minutes of planks (longest - 5:23)

A new forearm plank PR of 5:23!  Wasn't expecting that but I felt good this morning and the minutes ticked by.  Once I saw that I was at 4:30 I dug in and held on to grab a new best.

Sadly I got to work and immediately got bummed at, well having to work.  I was in a mopey mood all day and when it came time to run at lunch I bailed because I'm a lazy asshat.  Shameful.

Tuesday - Providence, RI - 6 miles

6 minutes of planks (longest - 3:08)

I motivated myself today by mapping out a run that would create a dirty picture.  This is immature I know, but sometimes we need to find motivation in the most juvenile of places.  I enjoyed the process of mapping a picture with a route and then seeing it to fruition.  I may do it again (it may or may not be dirty).

A happy fellow

Wednesday - Seekonk, MA - 7.3 miles

6 minutes of planks (longest - 3:10)

Friggin' close to 60 degrees today.  Pretty crazy considering we're getting up to a foot of snow tomorrow.  Anyway the beautiful weather was motivation enough to get me over to the track.  I initially did 8 x 400 - a bit sluggish but I got them done.  I have enough left in the tank for two more to make it an even 10.  I'm happy with my effort.

Thursday - Charlestown, RI - 9 miles

With a big storm bearing down on us I went over to Carter Preserve for a morning run before the heavy stuff began coming down.  A few minutes after I started the icy snow began to fall and I was looking forward to the blustery conditions for the whole run.  Then after 15 minutes it petered out and by the time I reached the train tracks I realized it had turned into a light rain. Not what I was planning on and over the next forty minutes the chilly rain continued.  Despite this and the muddy sections of the preserve I enjoyed the run. Not long after I got home the blizzard began in earnest and now we've got a good ten inches outside.

Friday - Charlestown, RI - 2 miles

6:30 minutes of planks (longest - 3:22)

Another day of working at home compliments of yesterday's snowstorm.  I went over to Carter Preserve at lunch and spent 50 minutes breaking trail in snowshoes.  It was beautiful out there but slow going.  Definitely no running going on, especially with my touring shoes.

Saturday - 0 miles

Sunday - Charlestown, RI - 12.4 miles

I also had given up on running this weekend and was ready to take a zero when Amanda said she had afternoon plans which prompted me to get out in run in the late morning.  I timed it perfectly with the new storm that was arriving - it began to snow as I began to run and by the time I reached the end of Old Coach it was already sticking to the ground.  I stuck to country roads with a short stretch on Route 2.  It snowed throughout and traction on the road finally weakened by the time I returned to Old Coach. Luckily the freezing rain held off until later in the afternoon.

Weekly Log: 1.30.17 - 2.5.17

Monday - Seekonk, MA - 6 miles

6:30 minutes of planks (longest - 3:02)

My calves and hamstrings are pretty sore after a weekend of hiking in the Whites.  I picked up a pair of NB Vazees up in North Conway and wanted to try them out. I opted for quiet country roads of Seekonk.  Legs warmed up soon enough and this ended up being a great, relaxing run.

Tuesday - 0 miles

6 minutes of planks (longest - 3:12)

No run today.  Was going to yoga but chumped out.  Just as well as I had to leave early and deal with a bunch of bullshit traffic thanks to the snow.

Wednesday - West Greenwich, RI - 7 miles

7 minutes of planks (longest - 4:04)
165 push-ups (standard/wide) 30/30/25/30/25/25

Early last year I did planks 5-6 times a week and I hit a 4 minute plank in by the end of March.  I continued to plank inconsistently through July hitting a high water mark of 5:12.  Then things fell apart.  But with the new year I've tried to get back into the habit of doing them every morning.  This was my first 4 minute plank since last July.  The consistency is paying off.

The upside of yesterday's snow was that I got to Big River this morning for a great trail run.  Just enough snow to make it fun but not too much to be a pain to slog through.  Couple fat bike tire tracks already out there.  Did a loop around Carr Pond.  Great way to start the day.

Thursday - East Providence, RI - 6.1 miles

6 minutes of planks (longest - 3:12)

Was intending to make it a track day (would've been three weeks in a row) but the Seekonk High track was covered in snow.  Dejected, I went over to the Ten Mile River bikepath.  It was mostly clear of snow but had some crunchy parts.  But the damage was done - any interest in speedwork vanished and I slogged my way through this run.  By the midway mark I had no motivation left but luckily I had no choice but to run in order to get back to my car.  Best thing I can say about this run was that I got it done.

Friday - Smithfield, RI - 7.5 miles

5 minutes of planks (longest - 2:37)

Got over to Wolf Hill for an early run.  Plenty of snow on the trails here and it made for an enjoyable time.  Sought out the biggest hills there - definitely need to get back to consistent hill work.  Chilly in the mid 20s but I dressed appropriately for once and really enjoyed this one.

Saturday - 0 miles

6 minutes of planks (longest - 3:10)

Sunday - West Greenwich, RI - 16.1 miles

Ran mostly dirt roads along the New London Turnpike.  Started on the west side of Big River and took the turnpike out of the management area and south.  A few pavement sections but otherwise all dirt.  I veered off onto another dirt road towards the end and turned around at the 8 mile mark.  It was mostly downhill on the way back so I was able to pick up the pace a bit.  Good long run.

Weekly Log: 4.7.16 - 4.13.16

Monday - 0 miles

6:41 of Planks (Elbow - 2:25 / Left straight arm - 0:47 / Right straight arm- 0:36 / Straight arm - 1:39 / Elbow - 0:22 / Straight arm - 0:19 / Elbow - 0:33)

Welcome to Cap'n Planky's Vunderblog! This week's target is 6:30 minutes of total planking (ideally with no breaks other than transitioning from one form to another).  This morning was rough.  I wasn't in it mentally and as you can see I put myself in a hole which required me to gut out some sad additional planks.  Still I to the 6:30 mark.

I went to Lunch Yoga to start the week off right.  The Yogi Julie is one of the best there and she speeds the moves up after a while.  Good session.

Tuesday - Seekonk, MA - 2.4 miles

6:43 of Planks (Elbow - 2:41 / Left straight arm - 1:21 / Right straight arm- 1:03 / Straight arm - 1:28)
135 push-ups (standard/military/wide) 20/20/30/20/15/30

Felt much better this morning during planks.  It's very much mental and I went into it determined to improve on yesterday.  At lunch I went for a walk around the Turner Reservoir.  Beautiful spring day out there and walking doesn't irritate the ankle so at least I'll be able to walk/hike during this downtime.

Wednesday - Burlingame, RI - 3 miles

6:39 of Planks (Elbow - 2:30 / Left straight arm - 1:07 / Right straight arm- 1:08 / Straight arm - 1:54)

More good planking.  I'm getting some wrist pain during the side straight arms.  Folks have suggested going on my elbows but I don't care for that position.  Others have suggested wrist straps so I need to look into that.

I was working from home today as we're having boiler i$$ues.  Took advantage of the beautiful day and went for a hike in Burlingame.  Parked on King's Factory and did a Vin Gormley > Schoolhouse > Sammy C loop.  Felt good to be out there.

Thursday - East Providence, RI - 2 miles

6:40 of Planks (Elbow - 2:40 / Left straight arm - 1:21 / Right straight arm- 1:01 / Straight arm - 1:38)

An easy walk along the Ten Mile River Bikepath.  Sprinkles throughout but when it's nearly 70 degrees who gives a damn!

Friday - 0 miles

6:36 of Planks (Elbow - 2:24 / Left straight arm - 1:15 / Right straight arm- 1:10 / Straight arm - 1:47)

Saturday - 0 miles

Sunday - Charlestown, RI - 1.9 miles

6:09 of Planks (Straight arm - 3:04 / Elbow - 1:01 / Left straight arm - 0:35 / Right straight arm- 0:37 / Elbow - 0:52)

Mixed up my planks today and did the straight arm first.  It threw everything off as I knew it would.  I'm a creature of habit.  I took the dog for a walk in the morning.  Felt guilty about not getting out there for a longer hike.

Weekly Mileage: 9.3 miles
Year to Date: 116.8 miles

So yeah, I'm counting all these walks/hikes as running mileage.  Sue me!  I've got to pad the stats somehow.  My ankle definitely feels better and I'm not getting any of the ache/stinging I was getting first thing in the morning.  So apparently the rest is doing me good.  Now to just not run for another month to make sure I've got this thing licked.

Weekly Log: 2.22.16 - 2.28.16

The make-up date for the Belleville Pond 10k is this Saturday.  I'm not any more prepared than I would have been a few weeks ago but no matter I'll run it just the same.  Next week is the Ocean's Run 1/2 Marathon which I signed up for a lifetime ago.  I'm certainly not in any shape for a long road race so I'll probably end up bailing on that one.

Monday - East Providence, RI - 4.1 miles

5:30 of Planks (Elbow - 2:22 / Left straight arm - 1:07 / Right straight arm- 0:48 / Straight arm - 1:10)

I wanted a nice easy four miles to start off the week.  It's another beautiful February day at 50 degrees.  I went over to run the bike path in Riverside but it didn't take long before the ankle made itself known.  By two miles it was aching and the run back I was miserable and dejected.  It hurt considerably afterwards and I had a noticeable limp.  A bummer of a run.

Tuesday - 0 miles

6:03 of Planks (Elbow - 3:07 / Left straight arm - 1:02 / Right straight arm- 0:47 / Straight arm - 1:05)
A new plank PR of 3:07!

Started the day with my best plank yet.  I'm starting to see some progress now that I'm doing them consistently.  I like this workout - it's short and sweet provided I can motivate myself to do it in the morning after my shower.  If I delay it until later it usually doesn't get done.

At lunch time I went to Yoga for the first time in a long time.  Good session.

Wednesday - East Providence, RI - 4.7 miles

5:04 of Planks (Elbow - 2:06 / Left straight arm - 0:53 / Right straight arm- 0:43 / Straight arm - 1:20)

Dropped the car off for an oil change in the morning and ran back to the office.  With a light drizzle my hands were freezing by the end of this 1.5 mile run.  In the afternoon I made a longer route to pick up the car.  It was raining pretty steadily throughout.  I forgot shorts so I had to run in my white track pants which are straight pimpin'.  Sadly I tripped on a broken up sidewalk and went down, ripping up the pants and both of my fleece gloves.  Now soaking wet and filthy, the blood began to run down the pant leg, completing the look.  Between this, hiking and the thorns of the Great Swamp my legs are looking so so pretty.  At least the ankle wasn't that bad.

Thursday - Seekonk, MA - 3 miles

5:28 of Planks (Elbow - 2:22 / Left straight arm - 1:06 / Right straight arm- 0:50 / Straight arm - 1:10)
135 push-ups (standard/military/wide) 30/20/30/20/15/20

Another morning of planking to start the day.  I do like this quick workout.  Tried to do push-ups later in the morning and I was feeling the effects of the planks (I also just haven't done push-ups in a while).  I went for a three mile run at Seekonk Meadows but it was a struggle.  The ankle acted up almost immediately and the whole run was a chore.  Hopefully when I go to the doctor next week I'll find out what the issue is.  I'm afraid the diagnosis might just be an incurable shitty ankle.

Friday - 0 miles

Home with a sick Ezri.

Saturday - Belleville Pond 10k - 7.7 miles

Official time: 46:02.  24th overall.  Report forthcoming.

Thanks to painkillers the race wasn't too bad and I felt alright until the evening when my ankle really began to ache from the usual jankiness as well as rolling it badly during the race.

Sunday - 0 miles

An easy day of organizing the house.  My ankle is sore, as it is my penance for trying to run a race yesterday.

Weekly Mileage: 19.5 miles
Year to Date: 104.5 miles

Sunday, February 7, 2016

Weekly Log: 2.1.16 - 2.7.16

New month - same as the old month?  I hope not as I don't think I can take another 30 days of such stagnation.  We shall see.  The Belleville Pond 10k is this weekend.  I haven't missed it in several years and I'd hate to miss it now - especially with the new racing sign-up's cool standings page.  With Bob Jackman heading south to torture himself on donuts, here's my chance to sneak into the top three in my age group.  I hope to be there, janky ankle and all.

Monday - 0 miles

190 push-ups (standard/military/wide) 30/20/35/30/20/30/25

Ankle was really sore today after yesterday's trail run so I opted to do little and less. I did convince myself to do push-ups towards the end of the day so that's something.  My push-up strength is slowly coming back.

Tuesday - 0 miles

I was going to run at lunch but the ankle ached and I bailed, partially out of concern and partially because I was feeling lazy.  Should've just gone out and ground out a few miles.

Wednesday - Seekonk, MA - 4.5 miles

New Plank PR: 2:44
155 push-ups (standard/diamond/wide) 25/15/30/30/15/40

My plank time is starting to get up there (for me anyway). Not doing anything special other than attempting one long plank per day.  Some days I chump it and I don't bother on Ab Ripper days.  A lot of deep breathing and concentration but I'm intrigued to see how long I can go.

At lunch I ventured to the Caratunk Preserve.  50 degrees and windy but warm enough for shorts and a T.  Beautiful out there even though the ankle hurt mildly for the whole thing.

Thursday - 0 miles

My plank for Lunch Yoga was twarted by work bullshit.  Planned to rest Old Man Jank and not run so there was nothing to do today.

Friday - 0 miles

Ab Ripper X (15 minutes)

Worked from home due to the snow storm so I missed out on Lunch Yoga again but I'm certainly not going to complain about not having to drive up to the city.  The storm put the kibosh on tomorrow's race at Ryan Park - no port-o-johns or places to park.  Bummer.

Saturday - 0 miles

I should've done something active today but once again I was a lump.  It ended up being good that the race was postponed as it gave me more time to get things ready for Ezri's birthday party today.  Seven years old!  Where does it go?

Sunday - Charlestown, RI - 5 miles

Ankle hasn't been aching that much so I didn't really have any excuse.  I went over to the Carter Preserve to try out my microspikes for the first time.  Beautiful day in the 40s and snow was mushy and plopping off the trees.  They work well but in the rotting snow they picked up a lot of snow clumps.  Even with only an inch or two of snow it was tough going, in part because of my fading fitness.  I took a couple snow plops off the head which took me unaware.  One of them really smarted.  Ankle wasn't too bad on this run.  Hopefully a positive sign.

Weekly Mileage; 9.5 miles
Year to Date: 41.7 miles

Sunday, January 31, 2016

Weekly Log: 1.25.16 - 1.31.16

Here we come at last to the last week of January.  A less than stellar start to the year with a total of 16 miles accumulated thus far.  I'm finally going to the doctor for my janky shin/ankle this week so we'll see if anything comes of it.

Monday - 0 miles

So the Nurse Practitioner didn't have much to say about the Jank McStank.  She thought it was a tendon along the inner ankle but didn't think an X-ray would do much.  I have an appointment with a specialist in a few weeks.  I'll be easing into some runs and following them with an ice/drug regimen. Hopefully it won't get worse before the specialist.

Tuesday - East Providence, RI - 5.1 miles

New Plank PR: 2:05

Since the tendon thing hasn't gotten any better lo these many weeks, I didn't see much point in continuing to not run (as it was just making me miserable).  So I brought my snowshoes and microspikes up to the office intent on getting some outdoor time at lunch.  I didn't count on it being a balmy 50 degree day.  There was spotty snow/slush on the Ten Mile River Bike path.  The trails nearby had a couple inches of slushy snow - imminently runnable.  I ended up forgoing any additional traction and sticking to snowy surfaces as much as I could.  The tendon stung briefly at the beginning and then was a non-issue.  It was great to be back out there, especially on such a beautiful day.

Wednesday - East Providence, RI - 4 miles

New Plank PR: 2:17
160 push-ups (standard/diamond/wide) 25/15/25/25/15/30/25

Ankle wasn't too bad today so I decided to risk another run, this time along the East Bay bike path.  It was pretty achy right from the getgo and I was always aware of it.  It became really sore later in the day as a result.

Thursday - 0 miles

Ab Ripper X (15 minutes)
Lunch Yoga (45 minutes)

Well my ankle really hurt after yesterday's run.  Bah, so much for being over the hump.  I went to lunch yoga instead and the ankle was fine but later in the night driving home from band practice it really ached.

Friday - 0 miles

Lunch Yoga (45 minutes)

Ankle's somewhat better today but no point in beating it up with another run so I did lunch yoga for the second day in a row.  Really good session.

Saturday - 0 miles

Another weekend day of lethargy, which has become my habit.  I played a lot of Minecraft, harvesting obsidian and exploring the Nether.  If you don't know what I just wrote that's probably for the best.  I do feel some shame when I spent a good portion of a beautiful day in front of the TV but it's an old pleasure I'm happy to revisit. Maybe it's time to resubscribe to World of Warcraft, gain 30 pounds and get a new gaming rig.  I'll rejigger this into a gaming blog and Seth 2.0 will officially be dead.  Stay tuned!

Sunday - Westerly, RI - 6.8 miles

New Plank PR: 2:32

Another gorgeous day out there (50 degrees) and the ankle jankyness was low so I knew I had to get out there.  I had some shopping in Westerly so I decided to hit up the Champlin Glacier Preserve.  Lots of people enjoying the trails today.  The ankle was uncomfortable after a mile but it was manageable so I ignored it.  They've cleared out a lot of the land - apparently to make a haven for small creatures.  Should look nice once the vegetation grows in.  Beautiful run in the woods and even with the ankle discomfort it was well worth it.

Weekly Mileage: 15.9 miles

Year to Date: 32.2 miles

So January 2016 comes to a close with my lowest monthly mileage since May 2011.  Nowhere to go but up!

Saturday, January 23, 2016

Weekly Log: 1.18.16 - 1.24.16

Here we are in the midst of what could be called the Great Malaise.  My janky shin seemed to get better on its own before aching again.  I almost definitely need to go to the doctor this week.  I'm feeling very scattered and perhaps depressed.  Maybe I'll just give up running entirely.  We've started playing Minecraft in my house.  Perhaps it's time to return to my video game roots, pack on twenty pounds and get a new couch for the basement.

Monday - 0 miles

I have a dream - that one day I will run again.  With a couple inches of snow on the ground it looked lovely out.  Too bad Ezri is sick with a head cold.  I wrapped up the three day weekend as I began it, doing little and less.

Tuesday - 0 miles

Ab Ripper X (15 minutes)

I stayed home with Ezri as she recovered from her cold.  Got up and did the Ripper in the morning so that's something I guess.

Wednesday - 0 miles

Lunch time yoga for $5.  They crank the heat during the winter so I work up a sweat which makes me feel like accomplished more than I probably did.

Thursday - 0 miles

135 push-ups (standard/military/wide) 20/20/25/25/20/25

The threat of a major snowstorm from the beginning of this week is beginning to fade.  Looks like we're only going to get a couple inches this weekend.  This is for the best.

Shin is still an issue.  It's fine for the most part but when I wake up or get out of the car after my commute I can feel it stinging.  Very strange.  I'm getting it checked out on Monday.

Friday - 0 miles

Ab Ripper X (15 minutes)

I did much better on this round of the Ripper. A few consistent attempts is all it takes. Now they're saying we're going to get a decent amount of snow.  Whatever.  Bring it on!

Saturday - 0 miles

Big storm bearing down on us.  A good day to stay in the warm basement and intermittently head out for snow fun.

I saw a Facebook post from Peter Maksimow talking about his love of planking.  That inspired me to start doing them more frequently.  I did my longest ever this morning - 1 minute 42 seconds.  Let's see how long I can go!

Sunday - 0 miles

Ten inches of fresh snow on the ground.  Luckily we kept up with the shoveling yesterday and with the overnight plow we were in good shape.  Did some snowshoeing on the hill behind my house.  These things work well - looking forward to some longer forest walks.  New plank record: 1:52.

Weekly Mileage: ZERO
Year to Date: PRACTICALLY ZERO

Friday, June 5, 2015

Weekly Log: 6.1.15 - 6.7.15

A new week, a new month.  I'm without my beloved spacewatch this week.  A new one will hopefully arrive by week's end.  Until then I'm going to have to map out runs/guestimate my distance.  First world problems, indeed.

Monday - East Providence, RI - 7 miles

I parked further south along the East Bay bike path so I could explore further.  The section in Riverside was in rough shape from the previous night's storm - lots of rocks and debris on the path.  It was overcast and cool but the rain held off - perfect running weather.  The last time I was on this path was during the 2012 Providence Marathon so my memory was hazy.  Down into Barrington the path runs alongside a beautiful pond/marsh landscape.  Unfortunately it was time to turn around at this point.  Nice area and I'll be sure to return again.

Tuesday - West Greenwich, RI - 6 miles

200 push-ups (standard/military/wide) 30/25/25/30/20/40/30

Cold and rainy morning.  Amanda wasn't working so I was able to run before heading up to Providence.  That meant trails even though conditions were shitty out there.  I opted to stick to the dirt roads of Big River.  It made for a relaxing morning run once my hands warmed up.  Instead of my lunch run I went to donate blood - always a good thing to do.  And another family milestone - Em got her driver's license today.  Watch out world!

Wednesday - Providence, RI - 8.1 miles

Elbow planks (in seconds) 47/54/62/55/43/53/66/52/62

Planks!  The great equalizer.  Did some of these in the office today and oof, that'll do it.  I've been slacking off about doing push-ups in the morning so this little office sessions seem like a good alternative.

Beautiful day for a lunch run so I went over and did a loop through Providence.  Early on I took a path behind East Side Market to an old railroad drawbridge that's no longer in use.  A guy was running down the tracks pops out of the woods and introduced himself - turns out it was Warren Angell and he recognized me from our mutual friends.  You never know who you're going to meet on a run.  Then I continued on through India Point Park and over to Kennedy Plaza but heading back to the office through Brown.  A fun run and the legs felt good.  This mid-distance runs seem to be doing the trick!

Thursday - East Providence, RI - 4 miles

180 push-ups (standard/wide/decline) 30/25/20/30/30/20/25

Dropped the car in the morning off nearby for an oil change and ran the mile back to the office.  In the afternoon I ran back to pick it up but went and checked out the new "Linear Park."  It's the rebuilt bike path along 295.  It's actually pretty nice and there's a separate walking section from the bike lane for most of it.  Not sure if it makes it any faster for me to get over to India Point Park but it's a nice alternative.  Very easy day overall.  And my new Garmin Forerunner 210 arrived at home - looking forward to trying it out tomorrow.

Friday - Seekonk, MA - 10 miles

Ab Ripper X (15 minutes)

My new watch is here!  The Garmin Forerunner 210 is a streamlined watch with less info displays.  But since I never used the 305 for setting up fancy workouts, this one should suit me just fine.  Decided to try a loop that incorporated Caratunk, a bunch of country roads and then those dunes I discovered nearby.  It's spring and Caratunk is in its glory - tall grasses and plenty of flowers and creatures.  From there I followed the powerlines to where I bushwacked through the woods to a super fancy neighborhood with the swankiest of the swank houses dwell.  I was now in familiar territory and took these roads for a big loop which eventually led to the dunes.  I wanted to do a loop around the pond before taking another potential shortcut back to some roads.  Guess I was a little cocky 'cause I got pretty turned around in there.  It ended up adding an extra 1.5 miles to the run.  Looking at Strava, I should have stuck to my guns because I turned around right before the trail I was looking for.

The trail around the pond was busy.  First I had to skirt past a giant old fashioned van two stoners had driven down a dirt trail that barely fit it.  Once I got past Fishbowl McGee and Smokey Joe, I soon came upon a couple more respectable teen fishing in the pond.  The shortcut I was looking for worked, I came out in a neighborhood but it was still another 1.5 miles back to the car.  I'm sure with some snooping I can find a more direct shortcut back to Caratunk.  Anyway the watch seemed to work well and as a plus it's very wearable as an everyday watch.

Back in business!

Saturday - South Kingstown, RI - 2.5 miles

In what was less of a run and more of an excuse to mess around with the new spacewatch, I stopped over near Matunuck Schoolhouse Road to check out a few (very) small trail sections.  The first was an Art Trail with about 24 different exhibits along it's very short route.  Then I continued on to a management area that led to a field with very tall grass.  Looked like tick central so no thank you.  Then I found a found down a utility road of some sort.

Sunday - Charlestown, RI - 9.9 miles

I was planning a long run but we made a last minute decision to attend the Backroads Ramble 5k at Camp Wachaug.  I still went out in the morning but cut the run short.  I did two loops in North Burlingame on the main dirt roads.  Got six miles out of it and my legs felt tired.  How would I race in a few hours?

As it often is, the legs loosed up and felt much better by race time.  I'll have a separate report on the race itself soon enough.

Weekly Mileage: 47.6 miles

Year to Date: 786.4 miles

Another solid week of running ending with an unexpected race.   Legs are feeling the miles so I plan to ease off a bit next week.
