Weekly Log: 2.29.16 - 3.6.16

Monday - 0 miles

6:17 of Planks (Elbow - 2:17 / Left straight arm - 1:12 / Right straight arm- 0:59 / Straight arm - 1:16 / Elbow - 0:33)

I had a good lunch yoga session to start off the week.

Tuesday - 0 miles

6:10 of Planks (Elbow - 2:16 / Left straight arm - 1:13 / Right straight arm- 0:52 / Straight arm - 1:15 / Elbow - 0:34)

Strange how close the numbers were to yesterday.  I've added another elbow plank at the end in order to bring the full plank time to six minutes.  I'd like to stick to six minutes of straight planking for the week.

I went to the orthopedic doc today to get the status of my ankle.  They took some x-rays, he felt the bone and his conclusion was that it's probably a pre-stress fracture.  The only remedy is time and that means taking 6-8 weeks off from running.  Bah.  Guess I'll need to look into other forms of exercise for a while.  Maybe I'll take up cycling.  Ha!  These roads would eat me alive.

Wednesday - 0 miles

6:07 of Planks (Elbow - 2:33 / Left straight arm - 1:14 / Right straight arm- 0:52 / Straight arm - 1:06 / Elbow - 0:22)

I should probably quit it with the mileage thing for each day since I've resigned myself to not running for a while.  I went to Lunch Yoga again today.  I imagine I'll be going more often now.  I'm thinking seriously about bringing a bike up here.  The office is pretty close to several bike paths so I could almost probably definitely make it to one of them without killing myself.

Thursday - 0 miles

6:13 of Planks (Elbow - 2:18 / Left straight arm - 1:00 / Right straight arm- 0:47 / Straight arm - 1:23 / Elbow - 0:45)

Hope you're having a planktastic day, 'cause that's all this blog is going to be about from now on!

Friday - 0 miles

6:12 of Planks (Elbow - 3:26 / Left straight arm - 1:11 / Right straight arm- 0:48 / Straight arm - 0:47)

New Plank PR of 3:26!  Knew it was going to be a good effort as soon as I started.  At lunch I went to Yoga.  Three yoga sessions this week - a new record.  And probably the new normal for a while.

Saturday - South Kingstown, RI - 3 miles

I went for a hike in the Crawley Preserve.  Not much to speak of but it was a lovely day and the streams were flowing.  Ankle was fine which was good to see.  So long as I don't run I should be able to stay active.

Sunday - 0 miles

6:06 of Planks (Elbow - 2:12 / Left straight arm - 0:48 / Right straight arm- 0:48 / Straight arm - 1:43 / Elbow - 0:35)

Weekly Log; 1.11.16 - 1.17.16

Monday - East Providence, RI - 6.3 miles

After a week of rest to let my left shin/ankle issue heal up, I decided to attempt a run today.  I started at the Ten Mile River bikepath and did a mix of trail and sidewalk that looped me around through the Seekonk Meadows trails as well.  It felt great being back out there, though I misjudged the temp and overdressed.  Unfortunately by mile three the shin pain was noticeable and it was really bothering me for the last mile.  So the issue isn't any better and in fact this run probably made it worst.

Tuesday - 0 miles

I was hobbling around this morning and it hurt to put too much pressure on my left foot.  The whole thing has got me depressed.  I suppose I'll need to schedule a doctor's visit.

Wednesday - 0 miles

Ab Ripper X (15 minutes)

From the depths of hell rises the Ripper!  It's been many months since I attempted this short P90X core workout and it was shameful.  I was flopping around like a trout and could barely make it through any of the exercises.  But with my janky feet I've no choice but to wrangle this beast once again.

Thursday - 0 miles

135 push-ups (standard/wide) 15/20/20/20/25/20/15

The soreness!  Yes the core is a field of DOMS.  Attempting to do push-ups today was sort of sad but I ground 'em out.  Ankle/shin isn't feeling too bad today but I know it's just a ruse to lure me into complacency.  Nice try!

Friday - 0 miles

Still very sore from the Ripper! Putting on my pants is tough.  I did lunchtime yoga with Amanda at Providence Power Yoga.  I was sweating pretty good by the end but I definitely felt less sore.  Ankle/shin wasn't an issue.  Is it actually improving?  We'll see.  The gig tonight at Tara's may just beat it up again.

Saturday - 0 miles

Yeah the shin was janked out after the gig last night.  Was better for most of today but then towards the end of the day I can feel it aching.  Blah.

Sunday - 0 miles

So my hope that the shin thing was getting better on its own was misguided.  It's clearly not.  I should've gone to the doctor this past week but I was lazy and now I've set back my recovery even more.  Amanda has noticed how mopey I am - without the running outlet I'm a lazy sad sack.  Oh well.  With every new week comes new hope.

Weekly Log: 5.15.15 - 5.21.15

Last week my dreaded nemesis the Janky Knee reasserted itself.  I didn't do much running and was a bit bummed out.  Hopefully I will return back to the fray this week.  It's now less than two weeks until the Ragnar Trail Relay up in Mass and I want to be ready!

Monday - East Providence, RI - 5.7 miles

195 push-ups (standard/military/wide) 35/25/35/35/25/40

A drizzly rain continued throughout the day but the temperature was warm.  I was determined to get a run in and luckily ol' Master Jank didn't feel too bad.  I decided to do a little exploration down in Riverside.  As soon as I started I felt good - I guess almost a week off will do that to you.  The pace was peppy in the low 7s and I explored a nice neighborhood along the bay.  Memories of the 2012 Providence marathon came back as I recognized a neighborhood the race employed for a very odd turnaround.  I followed some steps down to the beach and ran along the water for a few moments.  The bay was silent, waveless and shrouded in fog.  Very serene but the low tide stank was powerful.  Then I continued on narrow roads lined with beachhouses that reminded me of my great aunts' house up in Buzzards Bay.  Great run with refreshing rain and lack of jankiness.

Tuesday - Rehoboth, MA - 6 miles

I decided to check out some new country roads farther to the east.  I parked at the Rehoboth Country Club and did a loop I had mapped out in advance.  I knew there'd be a couple hills and a downhill segment attempt near the end.  Knee didn't feel too bad and I was surprised how snappy the pace was.  This pleased me as I've been feeling slow ever since the Backroad Ramble.  On the segment I turned it on and kept the pace under six, in part thanks to the downhill though there were a few short uphills to contend with as well.  Very hot out there but the country houses were remote and beautiful.  A good run and the jankiness that came later was not unexpected nor or much concern.

Wednesday - 0 miles

Ab Ripper X (15 minutes)

I wanted to return to lunch yoga and that's just what I did.  Good session and I definitely think it helps keep everything loose and in working order.

Thursday - Smithfield, RI - 9 miles

240 push-ups (standard/wide) 35/40/35/40/40/50

Amanda was volunteering at Ezri's school today so I was able to get out of the house early this morning.  After considering my options, I decided it was worth the extra driving and went up to Wolf Hill in Smithfield.  It had been a while and I was happy to see a new trail sign at the entrance.  They've changed some of the trail names/blazes and added lovely little signs along the various routes.  I wanted to get a goodly amount of elevation today so I hit pretty much all the trails including a long stretch along the powerlines.  I was glad to see that the WWII Memorial trail had been extended - the No Trespassing signs and branch barricades were gone and now it was a legitimate section of the trail network.  Another big change was at the Mercer Lookout.  They cut down a bunch of trees in front of the lookout, improving the view towards Providence.  They added a second official parking lot near the Mercer Lookout as well.  Towards the end I was running out of time and considered just taking the trail along the pond back to the car - and lose precious elevation?  I headed back into the woods and up what is now the Mary Mowry Trail.  It's a legitimate climb and I was happy to head back down to the car after that.

With a good run done in the morning, I decided to hit up lunch yoga for the second day in a row.  Finished off a good day's work with office push-ups in the afternoon.

Purdy new signs at Wolf Hill

Friday - Charlestown/East Providence, RI - 9.2 miles

Ab Ripper X (15 minutes)

Did a couple miles in the early AM with the dog.  Cut through the woods to drop back down to our house to shorten the run so that I could fit in Ab Ripper as well.

It was a hot one and I had intended to venture over to College Hill but the heat turned me off.  I switched to the East Bay Bike Path instead, hoping for a little relief in the way of a bay breeze.  Not much wind but a portion of the run was cloudy so that was something.  I stuck to the plan for hills and ran repeats on the nearby roads.  Couple youngsters were skateboarding down some pretty steep drops so good on 'em.  In the end it only totaled about 500 feet of elevation but I was pleased to get it done on a scorcher.

Saturday - 0 miles

No running today but I did brew up 2.5 gallons of a new IPA recipe I found online.  It was an all-grain batch and once again I was undershot the gravity, coming in at 1.054 instead of 1.07.  Oh well.  It has a ton of different hops so it should be tasty.

Sunday - Charlestown, RI - 8.6 miles

We went to my parents' for lunch and I had notions of getting dropped off midway and running back home afterwards.  I should've known that was a foolish idea - once I gorged myself on dessert I had no desire for such things.  Plus janky knee was feeling achy so I was full of excuses.  Not wanted to take a zero for the weekend, I committed to taking the dog out when we got home.  After 3.5 with the dog I was afraid he was going to keel over so I dropped him off at the house and went back out.  At this point the temperature was finally breaking and I enjoyed the run up and down Old Coach.  No issue from the janky knee on the run so all's well that ends well.

Weekly Mileage: 38.6 miles
Year to Date: 833.8 miles

Nice rebound after issues with the janky knee last week.  Also a goodly amount of elevation (for me) totaling about 2600 feet.

Weekly Log: 9.29.14 - 10.5.14

NipMuck Marathon week is here!  I plan to take it pretty easy but still get in 25 or so miles before the race.  That'll give me 50ish for the week and then after Sunday it's easy peasy until Bimbler's Bluff 50k on the 19th.

Monday - Seekonk, MA - 4.4 miles

The plan was five easy miles in Seekonk Meadows.  I wore my New Balance heavy duty trail shoes to get some practice in 'em before Sunday.  The warmth/humidty of the weekend was still in effect and I'm glad it'll be gone soon.  At about mile four my right knee began to ache (it had happened towards the end of yesterday's long run) and I decided to end the run early.  The discomfort in the knee increased as I made my way back to the car.  Not exactly how I wanted to start this week.  Guess my mileage plan for the week is out the window - now I have to hope a few days of rest will improve things before NipMuck.

Tuesday - 0 miles

50 pull-ups (standard/chin-up/close grip) 5/7/6/5/7/6/6/8

Wednesday - 0 miles

225 push-ups (standard/wide/decline/diamond) 30/40/30/20/30/40/20/15

Went to lunch Yoga and got schooled by all these crazy positions.  The instructor had us on our back for the for the first 20 minutes and our legs were wrapped in all sorts of crazy positions.  Hard.

Thursday - East Providence, RI - 3 miles

45 pull-ups (standard/chin-up/wide) 5/7/4/5/8/4/5/7

Well, it was time to test out this knee.  I almost bailed on today's run, afraid of how it was going to go.  I went over to the Ten Mile River Bikepath and did three easy miles of bike path and trails.  No major discomfort in the knee.  I feel like it felt a little off but that could have just been in my head.  At any rate, the knee felt alright and now I'm feeling better about Sunday.  Of course I only ran three miles and on Monday's run the pain didn't even start until mile 4.  Still, no point in worrying now.  My plan is to rest the next two days and then do work on Sunday.

Friday - 0 miles

I thought about a short run but decided to quit while I'm ahead.  I will run NipMuck and if my knee craps out halfway through, I will shove socks and sticks in there and hobble the rest of the way.

Instead I ventured back over to Providence Power Yoga for the second time this week.  This was a good session with a bit of sped up pace at times which had me sweating.  Feeling good for Sunday.  Let's do this!

Saturday - 0 miles

Sunday - NipMuck Trail Marathon, Ashford, CT - 26.4 miles

4th overall.  Around 3:42.  Report forthcoming.

Weekly Log: 7.28.14 - 8.3.14

Now we've come to it: my self-imposed two week hiatus from running.  I decided to up the ante by cutting out alcohol as well.  I don't plan to just sit around and do nothing, rather I hope to get in some cross-training and maybe fire up a couple of the ol' P90X discs.

At the conclusion of this hiatus I will begin to increase my weekly mileage, as I look towards another ultramarathon in the fall.  I had considered the Stone Cat 50 miler but failed to pull the trigger before registration closed.  In the end this was probably for the best as I think a 50 miler would be too much for my body to handle just yet.  So I'm looking at doing another 50k however the prospective dates aren't quite where I'd like them to be.  Most of the races I'm looking at are two weeks after NipMuck.  Another week and I'd be much happier.  Still if I can commit to treating NipMuck as a training run I think it should be workable.  Right now I'm looking at either Bimbler's Bluff or the Big Brad 50k.  Bimbler's a lot of closer but I was just up in Pownal, ME so there's some desire to get back up there.  Then there's the Chatfield Hollow 50k which falls on the right weekend but features five 10k loops.  I've already done the five loop format and not really jazzed about revisiting it.

Monday - 0 miles

290 push-ups (standard/wide/decline/military) 40/30/40/30/40/40/40/30

Tuesday - 0 miles

P90X Legs & Back (60 minutes)

It's been 11 months since threw on this workout.  Legs & Back had been a mainstay of mine for much of 2013 but after NipMuck last year I never revisited it and since then my P90X time has tapered off dramatically.  Part of the problem was that this workout usually leaves me with a serious case of DOMS and as my mileage increased I stopped trying to squeeze it into my schedule.  I figured this morning would be a good change to revisit it.  Definitely a wake-up call and those wall squats were brutal.  Tomorrow should be interesting.

Wednesday - 0 miles

Ab Ripper X (15 minutes)

Welp, I pull the trigger and signed up for Bimbler's Bluff 50k since the price is about to go up.  From the race reports I've read it sounds like it will be a much bigger challenge than the TARC Spring Classic or the Pinelands 50k.  There will be no PR at this one!

I've got a good case of DOMS from yesterday's workout but it's pretty manageable.  I'd love to make this a weekly occurrence again but I wonder if it'd take too much out of me for running.  We'll see.

Thursday - 0 miles

My coworker Blair often goes to a lunch yoga class throughout the week and today I joined her at Providence Power Yoga.  Some of the poses were a challenge but luckily my time spent with P90X Yoga at least made me recognize most of them.  The class was 45 minutes long and quite enjoyable.  I hope to incorporate it weekly into my routine.

Friday - 0 miles

P90X Chest & Back (50 minutes)

Saturday - 0 miles

Sunday - Yep, you guess it.  0 miles

Weekly Mileage: 0 miles

Year to Date: 1,156.9 miles

Fun fact: My last week with 0 mileage was the third week of 2012.
