Weekly Log; 1.11.16 - 1.17.16

Monday - East Providence, RI - 6.3 miles

After a week of rest to let my left shin/ankle issue heal up, I decided to attempt a run today.  I started at the Ten Mile River bikepath and did a mix of trail and sidewalk that looped me around through the Seekonk Meadows trails as well.  It felt great being back out there, though I misjudged the temp and overdressed.  Unfortunately by mile three the shin pain was noticeable and it was really bothering me for the last mile.  So the issue isn't any better and in fact this run probably made it worst.

Tuesday - 0 miles

I was hobbling around this morning and it hurt to put too much pressure on my left foot.  The whole thing has got me depressed.  I suppose I'll need to schedule a doctor's visit.

Wednesday - 0 miles

Ab Ripper X (15 minutes)

From the depths of hell rises the Ripper!  It's been many months since I attempted this short P90X core workout and it was shameful.  I was flopping around like a trout and could barely make it through any of the exercises.  But with my janky feet I've no choice but to wrangle this beast once again.

Thursday - 0 miles

135 push-ups (standard/wide) 15/20/20/20/25/20/15

The soreness!  Yes the core is a field of DOMS.  Attempting to do push-ups today was sort of sad but I ground 'em out.  Ankle/shin isn't feeling too bad today but I know it's just a ruse to lure me into complacency.  Nice try!

Friday - 0 miles

Still very sore from the Ripper! Putting on my pants is tough.  I did lunchtime yoga with Amanda at Providence Power Yoga.  I was sweating pretty good by the end but I definitely felt less sore.  Ankle/shin wasn't an issue.  Is it actually improving?  We'll see.  The gig tonight at Tara's may just beat it up again.

Saturday - 0 miles

Yeah the shin was janked out after the gig last night.  Was better for most of today but then towards the end of the day I can feel it aching.  Blah.

Sunday - 0 miles

So my hope that the shin thing was getting better on its own was misguided.  It's clearly not.  I should've gone to the doctor this past week but I was lazy and now I've set back my recovery even more.  Amanda has noticed how mopey I am - without the running outlet I'm a lazy sad sack.  Oh well.  With every new week comes new hope.

Weekly Log: 11.9.15 - 11.15.15

This will be an easy week following the forty miles I ran at the RI 6 Hour Ultra (I'm slow getting the report done but look for it later this week).  Unfortunately by running the 6 Hour I accept that I probably sabotaged my chances of putting up a PR at Lil Rhody Runaround this weekend.  I still intend to run but I'm not sure what shape I'll be in.

Monday - 0 miles

Good lord, I don't think I've ever been this sore before.  I can barely walk.  I probably should have a cane.  Going up stairs is slow, going down is treacherous.  I hold onto the rail for dear life.  It takes two hands to lower myself onto the toilet.  I've heard gym guys talking about leg day - this feels like the affects of leg day times ten.

Tuesday - 0 miles

Slightly better than yesterday but I'm still a shambling mess.  Thankfully everything just feels really sore and not injured.  Just the result of 40 miles of pavement.  The next long one will definitely be a return to trails.

Wednesday - Charlestown, RI - 2 miles

The worst of the soreness finally appears to be over.  I was working from home due to Veterans Day and I took the dog out at lunchtime.  Two miles was enough for me and even with the 9 minute pace my quads began to get angry after two miles.

Thursday - West Greenich, RI - 5 miles

My legs were feeling much better today so I took to Big River for some easy trails miles.  I kept the pace slow and stuck to the widest trails - Sawmill and the New London Turnpike - but by the last mile my legs were feeling it.  Still it was good to get out there.  I'm hopeful that Sunday's race won't be a total shitshow now.

Friday - 0 miles

I didn't have much motivation to run at lunch.  Okay, I had no motivation.  This has been a slothful, gluttonous week.  Consider it a victory lap after last Sunday.  At any rate, this can't continue but for now I'm content to bask in the lazy.  On the plus side, the legs feel normal now.

Saturday - 0 miles

I took Em up to Boston to look at a couple colleges (I can't believe she goes to college next year).  Since I bailed on yesterday that means no running the last two days.  Chumpy but I'm alright with it considering I'm running an eight mile race tomorrow.  We'll see how it goes.

Sunday - Charlestown, RI - 10 Miles

Li'l Rhody Runaround.  56:40.  26th overall.  Quads became unruly around mile 3 and I took it easy the rest of the race.  Report forthcoming (maybe).

Weekly Mileage: 17 miles
Year to Date: 1,754 miles

The recovery from the 6 Hour would not be denied.  While my soreness was gone by the weekend, my legs were still in no shape to race.  It'll probably be another easy week as I have yet another unwise race next weekend (Mews Tavern 6.9k).

Weekly Log: 5.26.14-6.1.14

Post Pineland relief/comedown!  I've nothing on my plate for June and I mean to keep it that way.  I'll still be running of courrse but without any real agenda other than to make quality speedwork a weekly trend.  But this week I'm looking forward to taking it easy and letting my body recover from Pinelands.

Monday - 0 miles

SORE.  Yeah, I'm hobbling like an old man today.  Stairs are difficult.  In particular my calves and quads are beat up.  I'd like to thank the Bove family for putting me up for a couple days but it was time to head home.   It was a long drive and getting out of the car was a rough experience.

Tuesday - 0 miles

SORE.  Stairs are still tough. Forgive me for continuing to harp on Pinelands but I wanted to compare the splits from my two 50ks.  Indulge me, won't you?

The usual caveats about Garmin data apply but still, what a difference.  Obviously it's hard to compare courses but neither was dramatically harder than the other.  Pinelands had considerable more elevation but TARC had more of the traditional singletrack trail hazards that we're used to.

Of TARC I had written, "Ultimately my main problem was that I was running at a pace for the first two laps that exceeded my training."  I probably should have said "level of fitness" instead of "training."  While I ramped up my mileage before both races, I think it was the cumulative effect of twelve strong months of running that led to my Pinelands success.  What a difference a year makes!

Wednesday - East Providence, RI - 4 miles

Went for a very easy run at lunch time.  It was cold and windy, especially as I went over the bridge.  Rain threatened but never materialized.  Ran the trails in Blackstone Park for a couple miles before returning to the office.  My calves were grumpy by the end.  Legs are definitely still sluggish but they were feeling better by the end of the day.

Thursday - Charlestown, RI - 3.8 miles

210 push-ups (standard/military/wide/decline) 40/30/50/40/30/30

Stayed home with Ezri who is doing much better.  No pain and she can move herself around well - now we just need to get her used to using chairs instead of lying on the couch all day.  My mother-in-law came over for a bit and I got in a quick run with the dog.  Legs were feeling more springy than yesterday and the pace was peppy, especially for Oliver.

Friday - East Providence, RI - 5 miles

Another lunch run and the legs feel like they're back to normal.  Pace was snappy and I explored a few new streets.  Some weird blister pain popped up on the side of my foot with a mile to go which was kind of annoying.  Otherwise it was a hot but fun run.

Saturday - Charlestown, RI - 9 miles

Garvin invited a bunch of us to his place for an early morning trail run and breakfast.  He had planned out a good route using Browing Woods and DuVal trail.  Being only a couple miles away, I decided to ride my bike over which was proved how poor my bike riding has become.  We had a large group and headed down Worden's Pond before taking the Heart trail to Browning briefly.  Then we began a thorny, marshy bushwack.  Garvin and Galoob maintain that there were the skeletons of trails here but I think they're full of it.  Eventually we passed through the bog and arrived at the dirt bike trails that weave around the Sand Pits.

I had no idea these trails were so numerous and far reaching.  I'll definitely be back to check 'em out again.  After reaching Sand Plains Trail, Chris and Nate peeled off back to the house while the rest of us continued on.  By the time we reached the DuVal trail my legs were beginning to tire and once we reached the road I decided to bail out and just head back solo along Gravelly Hill.  No point in overdoing it on a recovery week.  Once everyone got back Chris provided a delicious breakfast of french toast bake, potatoes and of course mighty bacon.  Thanks to Chris and Katie for the tasty meal!

Sunday - 0 miles

Yesterday's run reminded me that it takes a while to recovery from a hard effort 50k.  I shall be taking it easy today.

Weekly mileage: 22 miles
